State Russian Museum houses the largest collection of Russian art in the world, including icon masterpieces of the 12^th -18^th centuries, splendid portraits by the Russian painters of the 18^th century, canvases by famous Russian realist masters, such as Aivazovsky, Repin and Surikov. Works of art by Filonov, Kandinsky, Shagal and Malevich acquaint visitors with well-known Russian avante-gardists. A large collection of sculpture occupies a prominent place in the museum. Interesting and original items are displayed in the department of old Russian applied art.
